Whenever I’m asked why Southern
writers particularly have a penchant
for writing about freaks, I say
it is because we are still able

I love this quote, because (old-time, traditional) Southerners are very distrustful of all things freakish. Earrings in strange places are often topics of conversation with my grandad. And Flannery O'Connor pens by far the most freakish.
