I disagree. I think some folks have a stronger lean towards repeat destructive behavior, despite their best efforts.

having overcome addictions, i agree.
now i know my weaknesses and can take steps to conquer them accordingly. a struggle at times? yes. hopeless? never.

Addiction is admitting that it's going to take more than sheer willpower to change your actions.
